This magazine is NME, it is a rock music advertisement, ‘new musical express’, it promotes artists singles and it advertises albums, it also does interviews with artists and bands. From the front cover of this magazine it is made obvious that David Bowie is the main story for this edition of the magazine as the anchorage text states this and really stands out. From the puffs we can tell that the magazine has interviews inside and that it supports or is going to support an issue within its target audience.
The target audience for this magazine is mainly teenagers who enjoy listening to rock bands such as Slipknot, Metallica, Nickelback etc, it would also be for people who enjoy reading about their favourite bands and artists. Depending on the stories in a certain week’s edition then the audience may vary to older people. Like this edition has David Bowie on the front cover, he was a big star in the 1970’s and this could mean that people from that generation would buy the magazine to read about him.
The mode of address of the main image is very heroic, he is made to look like a statue and somebody who people worship, and he also looks like somebody who the target audience would inspire to be. The colours of the image are vibrant and they set the mood of the photo. These colours and mood of the image are used to bring back the memories of when David Bowie was at the peak of his career. This shows that NME want their audience to understand and remember how inspirational David Bowie was. The colours, the mood and the anchorage text all make the reader think about the inspiration of the main image. It wants the audience to feel a connection towards David Bowie and to understand the story behind the image.
David Bowie is on the front cover, the whole front cover is a shot his face. He is on the front because NME have published a story about how influential he is. ‘more influential than he’s ever been’, this is the main story and it will make David Bowie’s fans buy the magazine so that they can read about him, the story is also a way of showing fans and NME readers the support and the fan base that David Bowie has.
The anchorage text says ‘Ultimate hero, David Bowie, more influential than he’s ever been by Brandon Flowers, Lady Gaga, Paul Weller, Fanelle Monae and Everything Everything’. This implies that he is still influential and inspiring. It also shows that he has influenced the artists named above in their music and their lifestyle. The anchorage text also states that David Bowie is an ‘Ultimate Hero’, this is supported by the image and makes younger generations who wouldn’t necessarily know who David Bowie is understand how famous he once was and how much of an impact he had on the music industry. Overall David Bowie looks very powerful and very inspirational, I think this message is given off to the readers of the magazine and this helps them to understand more about him as artist.
No particular group is being represented on this front cover but I think that all music has got some representation coming from this image. The anchorage text ‘Ultimate Hero’ makes the reader think about the power that David Bowie has over people and how much of an impact he has had on the music industry. This shows that most musical artists are represented in this image.
The only word that is made obvious and that stands out is “BETRAYED” which is on the cover lines. The reason this stands out is because it is made obvious, the speech marks and capital letters make you automatically take notice. It also makes you realise that it is a serious story because the lettering is bold and block.
The title block NME is very big, bold and block capitals. It really stands out when you look at the magazine and it’s the only thing that you really notice straight away. It shows that the magazine is very stern and serious about what it does. It also shows that in a way, the magazine is very organized about what goes in the magazine and how it is put in the magazine. Rock artists are normally big, scary, serious and they are noticed, the title is a way of representing them in this magazine.
The title of the magazine is NME it is in block capitals and seems to be representing the rock / punk genre that is in the magazine. In a way it is shouting at you or trying to get your attention where it is so big and bold. This is like rock artists, they are usually very loud and get a lot of attention for being so. ‘New Musical Express’ is the slogan underneath the title block, this would attract the audience because they want to know about new music and new artists.
The colours used are very dark and dull but the main image is rainbow. The main image is different colours which makes it stand out because the rest of the magazine cover is black and white. The colours are very attractive because although it still looks dull the front cover is very appealing and it really catches your eye. The fonts used are very block, this represents the genre of the magazine and is very masculine.
The magazine uses big bold words to attract the audience; they use words that will make someone think what the story is about. They make the words stand out against the background so that it gets the audience’s attention. The colours are also very dull but the main image is bright, this also gets the audience’s attention. Most of the strategies used by the magazine is to get the attention of the target audience, it is always to make something stand out and to make the audience want to know what it’s about.
